Instagram videos are better with audio, but not always. Sometimes you may want to remove the audio from videos in Instagram posts.
When you post a video on Instagram, you usually want to include or add audio to it. However, sometimes you want to remove the audio from videos you post on Instagram. Instagram makes it easy to lower or mute the sound for stories and posts from your phone.
For example, you might have a good recording of a local or national event, but the audio is distracting background noise. Or you might have a good recording of how to use a jackhammer to smash concrete like butter (hey, videos come in all sorts of forms), but you don’t want to hear the construction sound that goes with it.
In any case, you can easily remove audio from a video. You can do this when you are recording a video or by selecting an already recorded video from your phone’s camera roll.
Remove audio from videos in Instagram posts
You can remove the sound from a regular Instagram post using the following steps.
- Launch Instagram on your phone.
- Record a video or select a previously recorded video from the camera roll.
- Tap the Music symbol top center of the screen.
- Select the Controls button on the following screen.
- Tap the volume slider and move it all the way down to mute the sound for the video you are editing.
- Tap the Completed button and upload the post without music or other audio.
Remove audio from Instagram stories
Removing the sound from your Instagram story is even easier. Once you’ve recorded your story or selected a video you’ve already recorded, tap the speaker icon in the top left corner of the video before posting. A line through the speaker indicates that the video’s sound has been muted. If you want to test both options, you can turn the sound on or off by tapping the icon before posting.
Usually, audio makes your Instagram stories more fun and is often important when speaking to your audience, but this is a useful trick to remember if you just want to show off the camera working.
Managing audio in Instagram stories and posts
The other day I wanted to show my cat running through my flowering garden. Cute, right? Unfortunately, the wind was blowing like crazy while the sun was beautifully catching my green pepper plants. I find the sound of gale-like wind in a microphone extremely distracting. I could have edited the video and added a music track, but muting the sound was easier.
No matter what situation you’re in, remember that you always have the option to mute the sound. If you’re muting the sound of a traditional Instagram post, you can of course adjust it to the volume you want, but to mute it, you’ll need to drag the volume slider all the way down.
