If after watching Past Lives you’re craving another deeply emotional and probably slightly confusing project from Greta Lee, you’re in for a treat. The actress was recently cast in the lead role in My Notes on Mars, the first English-language feature film from Hungarian filmmaker Lili Horvát.
Lee plays Margot, a gifted scientist who unexpectedly disappears while on a hike with her friends and her husband Scott, played by the fellow Emmy and Golden Globe nominated actor and “Actors on Actors” alongside Andrew Scott (“Ripley”). Weeks after she is presumed dead, Margot resurfaces on the day a memorial is held in her honor, but is no longer the person her husband once knew. So Scott sees her return as an opportunity to put their existing marital problems behind them – a second chance.
Horvát, who wrote the screenplay, will also direct and produce “My Notes on Mars.” She is best known as the writer, director and producer of the romantic drama “Preparations to Be Together for an Unknown Period of Time.” The film was selected as the Hungarian entry for Best International Feature Film at the 93rd Academy Awards and won an Independent Spirit Award in 2021. Dóra Csernátony, who worked with the multi-talented director on her award-winning film, will once again serve as co-producer.
Shooting begins next spring between Budapest and Vienna. While not much else is known about the film yet, if you’re interested in “a story about the labyrinthine human psyche, about the ever-changing faces of love,” as Horvát promises, you should definitely keep an eye out for updates.
