Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Jahan Dotson took to the practice field with his new team on Wednesday, wearing a jersey number that Eagles fans are used to seeing on big, stocky tight ends.
Dotson, a former first-round pick, wore No. 1 during his two seasons with the Washington Commanders. That number is, of course, worn by Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts. The No. 5 that Dotson wore at Penn State is also no longer available. That number was retired in 2013 after Donovan McNabb was inducted into the Philadelphia Eagles Hall of Fame.
Therefore, Dotson will wear an old-school number on his brand new team – No. 87.

The most legendary Eagles player wearing number 87? Probably Brent Celek. The underrated tight end spent 11 seasons in Philadelphia and finished his NFL career with a win over the Patriots in Super Bowl LII.
The last Eagles player to wear that number? That was CJ Uzomah, who was one of the Eagles’ many roster cuts this summer.
It would be funny to see the 6-foot-3, 195-pound Dotson wearing a number that’s usually worn by much bigger guys in Philly. If the third-year pro emerges as a reliable WR3 this season, the jersey number will remain more of a running joke than a punchline.
