TOPEKA, Kansas (WIBW) – The YMCA of Topeka is one step closer to its goal of claiming ownership of its building.
The organization has been working for several years to raise funds to purchase the building at 3635 Southwest Chelsea Drive.
The Y filed for bankruptcy in 2021 after struggling to pay the lease payments, which has since been terminated under an agreement with CoreFirst Bank and Trust, which represents the bondholders who technically own the property.
Alexis Hill, CEO of the Topeka YMCA, issued a statement Wednesday afternoon saying that a court decision allowed CoreFirst to sell the building.
The city of Topeka told 13 News that it holds the property for tax purposes but has no financial interest in it.
Operations will continue as usual while the YMCA works toward closing a deal.
